Sweet and savoury from your younger years

What’s your favourite from your childhood?

Sweet- ice cream man in a van used to sell a block of strawberry and pear.

Savoury- after swimming at Harold Hill a packeting of cheese and tomato puffs. Or if there was none left pickled onion monster munch.

A whippy ice cream from the ice cream van with bright red strawberry sauce and sprinkled nuts .

Crisps and KP peanuts mixed together.

My mom grew up with bread, milk and strawberry jam for Sunday dessert at one point.


That said bread, milk and radishes and/or onions was summer supper sometimes.

Can't stand soggy bread.

I have ambiguous (triguous?) memories of my Gran's sugar sandwiches

“Bup & Sug” (sug pronounced like the word sugar shortened) my Nan used to call it, sometimes with a couple of banana slices in there too.

Used to get this massive mint honeycomb covered in chocolate (looked like big dog turd) in a green and white striped wrapper, glorious it was!
Also ridiculously sweet were the rock hard chewing gum sticks you’d get in the Star Wars trading cards packets.

Savoury I’d say the original Monster Munch beef flavour when they first came out at 12.5 pence a bag, you knew you had eaten them for about 3 hours afterwards!!!

I have ambiguous (triguous?) memories of my Gran's sugar sandwiches.

a) they were a crime against healthy eating;
b) they were probably a reaction against the end of rationing, and the gratitude of her kids (including my Dad) stuck with her;
c) I enjoyed them - though probably more from the mouth-feel than the taste.

Sweet = Berni Inn used to have a chocolate covered ice cream called the Bleeding Heart. Fabulous.

Savoury = Kentucky fried chicken back in the 70's. Far better than the KFC crap today.

My dad would do strong cheddar on apple pie, instead of ice cream or whatever.
Not English but maybe based on something because he had a lot of English tastes he got from his mum.

In Norfolk and the West Country they have been doing sweet and savoury for donkeys.
Honey and mustard hams,aged hams with marmalade.
A lovely combo.
Northerners have raved about their local cheese with lertover fruit cake.lovely stuff.

I'm not much of a CHEF but I'm ok as a COOK.

Rustled up me first bacon sarnie aged 7 whilst the parents kipped.

Can remember making a bacon and cheese pastry thing at school when I was about 9. That was good.

Sweet tooth? Yeah I can do that shit. Until it makes me feel moby. Best avoided.

A ploughmans lunch,

When I was at school there was a chip shop in town that sold the most wonderfully greasy rissoles. No idea what was in them but they were out of this world.

For sweet, I'll go with another childhood memory of the local baker selling off all her cakes at the end of the day for 1p. I'd always go for the custard slice.

Tasting my first fanny at 15. Didn't know what to make of it in all honesty. Still don't.
